Happy Republic Day !

Well, honest truth is I don't really know why we celebrate (if i can call it that) Republic Day. Of course , I learnt it in school , I hear people talk about it , get up early (even though its a holiday) to see the President's address and the Republic Day Parade. I use the occasion to be reminded of the fact that I am an Indian.

What defines Republic Day today ?
Songs like the "Vinara desham manadera .. " from Roja or "Yeh jo desh hai mera .. " from Swades ?
Having ethnic-day in schools/colleges and at work ?
Putting up the Tri-Colour at all important places ? perhaps at home or at your desk?
A mere holiday?

Don't get me wrong, I believe I am patriotic , It is with pride that I say "I am from India".(and I do get to say that very often nowadays :D)
Ours is the most amazing nation in the world. If I had to describe it in a word , it would have to be 'DIVERSE' .
Languages : One base and a dozen offshoots , and each offshoot with its own dialect .
Customs : Travel a few km any which way and you will probably find people talking a different language, wearing different attire with their own special cuisine, with their own songs, their own way of life.
Religions : Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims, Buddhists, Jains and so many more . Where else will you get to celebrate Diwali and Id and Christmas (and get holidays for all that too ;) ) Think of all the beauty that the influence of each religion has given us , from the temples at Belur-Halebid to the Taj Mahal to the monasteries at Kushalnagar.
Geography : From the snow capped Himalayas to the pretty Ghats down South, deserts and rainforests , beaches and backwaters. From Leh to Ramanagaram, each in its own unique way a path to the heavens beyond.

Think of the amount of exposure that we get to such a wide variety of ideas and beliefs , where else can we find the ability to co-exist as one.
The colours , the sounds , the people , the culture , the history , the knowledge , the power , the faith - all that stands for India .

People will always look to the past and say "We have centuries of history and glory behind us" . People will look around today and say "This country is going to the dogs". Will people ever look to the future and say "We are the hope of this country, we will take responsibility and shape our tomorrow"?

I believe that there is hope , there is that emotion in all of us , whether subdued or long forgotten , that emotion which knows how special it is to be part of this land.People may never get a chance to express their patriotism ,there may never be a need to. Or is there?
I have never felt that I have ever done anything that made me feel a part of this society, leave alone the country . There isn't really any avenue where people do something for their country, something like "All people above 18 have to join the army for 2 years" or a "All people should set up "x" amount of time to do social service" or something . I have always felt that there is no real sense of responsibility to the country instilled in me.Feeling part of a whole is something that I miss. Someday , I can only hope , that I can look back and honestly say that I did my bit for my India.

"On 26th January, we are going to enter a life of contradictions. In politics we will have equality and in social and economic life we will have inequality. In politics we will be recognizing the principle of one man one vote and one vote one value. In our social and economic life we shall by reasons of our social and economic structure continue to deny one man one value. How long shall we continue to live this life of contradictions? How long shall we deny equality in our social and economic life?"
-Dr. B.R.Ambedkar while presenting the draft for the constitution.

Happy Republic Day !

Ours might be the most diverse nation. I don't think it's something that we need to be really proud about seeing all the communal riots around us. People are content with their caste, creed, language, religion, mingle with their own folk every where and fight for unworthy causes. Is this really something to be proud of? People look down upon other people, not of their own caste. If this is not racism, then what is?
People need to broaden their horizons and their thinking, but that does not seem to be happening any time soon, ingrained as it is in their blood!

Well, well , well...
Communal riots , looking down upon another 'caste' , discrimination - I agree all that happens and doesnt really seem like there's a real solution to it. Not too much is 'ingrained in their blood' ,its only what one sees around them that one inculcates.People need to see and understand that nothing can be gained from meaningless squabbling and belittling.
There has to be a collective decision/consciousness to remove any discriminatory feeling.
One may not be able to be proud of the existing scenario , but one takes pride in heritage , one looks at the positives(while considering the flip side too),and one takes pride that we have the ability to question the situation and start working towards a solution.

If the very cause of all the disturbing events is because of the division in people, I would rather that no such division exists!

People will never change and pass the buck on to the next generation to make the change. If you bring up your sons/daughters to think like you, fat chance of that ever happening!

It takes ages for people to break out of the moulds in which they are brought up and many just think it's just not worth the effort.

I would rather that we all think of us as Indians first and then think of us as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Kannadigas, Telugus, etc... Unfortunately it's the reverse way around.

The world would be a much better place without divisions of religion, language, race, caste, creed, mindless traditions, superstitions and more.

What you speak about isnt the existing scenario, we are a hotch-potch of so many cultures that we cant really say that there should be no divisions , these cant be done away with . May be they will all slowly 'melt' into each other ... There is so much overlap nowadays isnt it ? Our parents probably never celebrated a festival which was not of their religion , but I do . That in itself shows there is a change from generation to generation . Our children may grow up to think like us or they may not. All you can do is set an example , it is all about being receptive to something new.Well, guess you can say the whole problem arises because I can say I am a Muslim or I am a Hindu when asked about my identity, saying I am an Indian will always be an after thought.
The whole point is , it is your origin , you can never change that - you are born into it.What you choose to make of it is upto you.
Of course the world would be an amazing place if all were equals .. if there was no way to discriminate .
What all one could do away with :
Religion
Race
Language
and while we are at it , lets add to the list
Social equality done, we should have economic equality
equality irrespective of gender
equality irrespective of which nation u belong to . . .
If all were equals (and still got to be unique in some way) .. but Utopia is a long way off.

Thought provoking discussion indeed! Thanks to Mythili!!!(Bhoomi puthri)

Calvin, don’t you agree that the world is beautiful since it is filled with "differences". We just need to have the ability to respect and tolerate the differences, that’s all it takes to form a peaceful society. If you are a peace loving creature, "start behaving like me" is the last thing you must ask from your fellow being. Think about it, young buddy!!!

Mythili, "Honest truth" is verbose. Please avoid such usages atleast in the beginning of a write up. Otherwise, I sense lots of peace and harmony in your "Ramblings"

Extremely happy to see such thoughts from an urban young mind! Usual urban minds are content with the very superficial things in life!

Good luck!

Well, well, well... what do we have here? :)

We are a hotch-potch (nice word!) of cultures, I agree, but these can be done away with, starting with simple things.
When you are in a group and you see someone talking in a language which one person can't understand point it out to them politely. You might be proud of your language and love your language, but if you can't show that basic consideration to people around you, what use is your heritage? I see this all too often among so called educated people! It is not your heritage that matters, what matters is how considerate you are to your fellow beings. You might be a sufi saint, but if you go about spitting on the roads, I can't respect you even as a person, forget respecting your heritage! Sadly, I could think of a hundred such examples.

Teach consideration to people, they might be your friends, colleagues, relatives, why even your parents.

Ask people to be considerate to each other, irrespective of 'differences'

These differences are what make people egoistic. Do we really need all these east-west clashes, hindu-muslim fights? tamil-kannada fights? why do we need any difference amongst us, which forces one to declare that he/she is superior to another? I agree that this is not the current scenario and that utopia is far away.

All I am trying to tell you is that you can't expect me to read your blog on being proud of one's heritage, when the ground reality I am in is frustratingly difficult to fathom.

Sandeepani, Yes I agree that the world is beautiful, but not because of the "differences", but because of those few people who are really considerate to everyone around them and these are the people that make your day.

Respect the individual for the work they do, not for where they came from.

Calvin,

People being considerate is a very good place to start. Someday , we may reach a world-where-all-are-equal , until then , do your bit and spread the thought.
Both of us agree that clashes due to differences are meaningless.
Our opinion differs at the point where you believe there should be no differences but I believe that it is the variety that is the beauty in us . Lets just agree to disagree on that :)

Sandeepani,
Thank you for dropping by.
The 'urban young mind' as u put it has more up its sleeve than it reveals to the world :D

P.S. Superficial things are not that bad either :)

Sandeepani February 2, 2007 at 2:10 PM

That’s purely your beautiful world, Calvin!

But if we look at it from a wider perspective, we realize that we all look at the life and the world differently, and in my opinion, that’s exactly what give aesthetic value to the life and the world!

Also, you got me wrong, Mythili!

I have nothing against the superficial things; I was only saying that it is quite admirable to see someone going bit further to the core!

Anyways, most of your blogs are beautiful!!!

Happy Blogging!
